The Canadian government has taken a significant step towards improving oral health care accessibility with the introduction of the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) in 2024. This program aims to reduce financial barriers for eligible Canadian residents who lack dental insurance coverage.
Who is Eligible?
As of 2024, the CDCP is available to:
Seniors aged 65 and over
Children under the age of 18
Adults with a valid federal Disability Tax Credit certificate for 2023
It's important to note that the Canadian Dental Care Program is designed for individuals and families with low-to-moderate incomes who don't have access to private or workplace dental insurance. Applications for all other eligible Canadian residents are expected to open in 2025
Coverage and Co-payments
The CDCP covers a wide range of oral health care services, including preventive, diagnostic, and restorative treatments.
The coverage amount depends on the adjusted family net income:
Adjusted family net income | CDCP coverage | Your co-payment |
Lower than $70,000 | 100% | 0% |
$70,000 - $79,999 | 60% | 40% |
$80,000 - $89,999 | 40% | 60% |
Participating Dental Providers
As of August 2024, more than 70% of dentists are accepting patients through the CDCP. This significant increase in participation is due to recent changes allowing dental clinics to submit claims without officially registering as CDCP providers.
How to Apply
Eligible individuals can apply for the CDCP online through the Government of Canada's website (Canada.ca/dental) or by phone at 1-833-537-4342.
Applicants will need to provide personal and financial information for themselves and their spouse or common-law partner (if applicable).
Important Considerations
The CDCP is not intended to replace existing dental coverage. If you have access to dental benefits through an employer, school, or other means, you are not eligible for the CDCP.
While there are no total spending limits under the plan, some dental services may require preauthorization.
Plan members will need to meet the eligibility requirements every year to qualify for the CDCP.
By improving access to oral health care for vulnerable populations, the CDCP aims to enhance the overall health and well-being of millions of Canadians. As the program continues to evolve, it's essential for eligible individuals to stay informed about updates and changes to the CDCP. By taking advantage of this new dental care initiative, many Canadians can now prioritize their oral health without the burden of prohibitive costs.
